Struggles

I don’t ask for help

which has infuriated those closest to me,

but I say

how can you expect me to open up and ask

or to share my struggles

if you have not laid a foundation of trust

where I feel I could do so.

Without fear,

where I know, unequivocally,

that you are present

that you are on my side

that you are for me.

How can I be expected to lay myself bare

to your gaze

if you are not even looking at me?
